Culture can be made up of many variables. Like a personality, it is affected by multiple aspects such as values, life experience, upbringing, beliefs, background and mindsets.

It could be founded on the value system of the founders and management and it could be affected by current employees. It is made up of the characteristics of a group of people and results in an unwritten, unspoken set of rules for working together.

Although it is particularly influenced by the founders, executives and management team, every employee can have an impact on the development of their workplace culture. Each person brings their own unique life experiences and perspective.

Culture could be defined by a groups’ cumulative deposit of language, beliefs, goals, attitudes, ways of acting and workplace norms.

The way you collaborate as a team, communicate and interact speaks volumes about your organization’s culture. This could include anything from “water cooler talk” to company-wide emails or employee interactions with the company’s founder. It could be expressed in a mission and values statement on the wall or something as simple as an employee expression of individuality in their clothing or office decor.

Central Concepts

Professors Ken Thompson (DePaul University) and Fred Luthans (University of Nebraska) take a look at the seven characteristics of culture:

  1. Culture = behavior. Culture describes the behaviors that represent the general operating norms in your environment. Culture is not usually defined as good or bad, although aspects of your culture likely support your progress and success and other aspects impede your progress.A norm of accountability will help make your organization successful. A norm of spectacular customer service will sell your products and engage your employees. Tolerating poor performance or exhibiting a lack of discipline to maintain established processes and systems will impede your success.       
  2. Culture is learned. People learn to perform certain behaviors through either the rewards or negative consequences that follow their behavior. When a behavior is rewarded, it is repeated and the association eventually becomes part of the culture. A simple thank you from an executive for work performed in a particular manner molds the culture.
  3. Culture is learned through interaction. Employees learn culture by interacting with other employees. Most behaviors and rewards in organizations involve other employees. An applicant experiences a sense of your culture and his or her fit within your culture during the interview process. An initial opinion of your culture can be formed as early as the first phone call from the human resources department. The culture that a new employee experiences and learns can be consciously shaped by managers, executives, and co-workers. Through your conversations with a new employee, you can communicate the elements of the culture you’d like to see continued. If this interaction doesn’t take place, the new employee forms his or her own idea of the culture, often in interaction with other new employees. This fails to serve the continuity a consciously created culture requires.
  4. Sub-cultures form through rewards. Employees have many different wants and needs. Sometimes employees value rewards that are not associated with the behaviors desired by managers for the overall company. This often is how subcultures are formed, as people get social rewards from coworkers or have their most important needs met in their departments or project teams.
  5. People shape the culture. Personalities and experiences of employees create the culture of an organization. For example, if most of the people in an organization are very outgoing, the culture is likely to be open and sociable. If many artifacts depicting a company’s history and values are evident throughout the company, people value their history and culture. If doors are open, and few closed-door meetings are held, the culture is unguarded. If negativity about supervision and the company is widespread and complained about by employees, a culture of negativity, that is difficult to overcome, will take hold.
  6. Culture is Negotiated. One person cannot create a culture alone. Employees must try to change the direction, the work environment, the way work is performed within the general norms of the workplace. Culture change is a process of giving and taking by all members of an organization. Formalizing strategic direction, systems development, and establishing measurements must be owned by the group responsible for them. Otherwise, employees will not own them.
  7. Culture is difficult to change. Culture change requires people to change their behaviors. It often is difficult for people to unlearn their old ways of doing things and to start performing the new behaviors consistently. Persistence, discipline, employee involvement, kindness and understanding, organization development work, and training can assist you to change a culture.


Other Characteristics of Culture:


Your work culture often is interpreted differently by diverse employees. Other events in people’s lives affect how they act and interact at work too. Although an organization has a common culture, each person may see that culture from a different perspective. Additionally, your employees’ individual work experiences, departments, and teams may view the culture differently.

You can mitigate the natural tendency of employees to optimize the components of the culture that serve their needs by teaching the culture you desire. Frequent reinforcement of the desired culture communicates the aspects of your work environment you most want to see repeated and rewarded. If you practice this reinforcement regularly, employees can more easily support the culture you wish to reinforce.

Strength or Weakness

Your culture may be strong or weak. When your work culture is strong, most people in the group agree on the culture. When your work culture is weak, people do not agree on the culture. Sometimes a weak organizational culture is the result of many subcultures or the shared values, assumptions, and behaviors of a subset of the organization.

For example, the culture of your company as a whole might be weak and very difficult to characterize because there are so many subcultures. Each department, work cell, or team may have its own culture. Within departments, the staff and managers may each have their own culture.

Positivity and Production

Ideally, organizational culture supports a positive and productive environment. Happy employees are not necessarily productive employees, and productive employees are not necessarily happy employees. It is important to find aspects of the culture that will support each of these qualities for your employees.

While there isn’t much support as to why this happens, or how exactly the alignment of the body over time effects headaches, this has been proven to be true for people who do stand more. This is another area where standing is sure to help, but it will come down to som much more. For instance, drinking water, routine exercise and, if you have serious back pains, more frequent visits to you chiropractor.

Increased Energy Levels

In our last blog post, we touched on a few of the colors that are fantastic to incorporate into your office space because of the effects that they have on your employees and in the building as a whole. Some of the main points that they affected were emotions, productivity and creativity. Today we’re going to visit the complete opposite end of the spectrum: distractions. Distractions are not an uncommon thing to have happen in an office space, in fact it’s one of the most common things that you does happen, so it’s fantastic that you are able to get ahead of the ball and find the things that are creating distractions so that you can avoid them.

Here are just a few of the things that might be cutting down productivity levels for your business.

Bright Colors
The first point that we’re going to hit on are colors. Since our last blog post was dedicated fully to colors that would create a productive space for your office, it only makes sense to touch on colors that will be distracting.

As you may have noticed in the last post, a lot of the colors that we talked about were subtle, muted colors. It may not be the most exciting color scheme, but they are colors that don’t draw too much immediate attention to the employees that are working in a space.

For the most part you’re going to want to stay away from any extremely bright shades of colors. There’s no one specific color that will make a difference in this because, quite honestly, most vibrant and bright colors make it difficult for the eyes to focus on what they’re working on elsewhere. If you can, find a color that incorporates a softer shade of that color, and use that. It’ll make for a better workspace and an overall higher level of productivity.

Dark Colors
Going off of the prior post on colors, dark colors are another area that you are going to want to do your best to try and avoid. When colors get too dark, employees can quickly become overly calm, which leads to feeling tired or getting lazy.

Again, if you’re hoping to add some touches of color, the best way to do it is in a more muted option. Whether that be only a hint lighter so that it’s really a grayish type of color, or going much lighter so that it is a diluted version of the color, you can count on this completely changing the overall feel for the better.

Overwhelming Noise
Something that we talked about in a previous post regarding office spaces and millennials, was that open spaces are something that people think millennials need. While that is a definitely a great way to try and incorporate collaboration, this is also a quick and easy way to make the amount of sound in an office space overwhelming.

While collaboration and having good relationships with your coworkers is great, when there is too much sound in an office it is extremely difficult to get work done and so much distraction that it’s extremely difficult to try and maintain focus on any given task. The solution to this is by designing an office space that has barriers between groups or that has some form of block between groups that are talking.

Office Layout
Determining which way to set up your office space is something that you will inevitably spend a ton of time working on. It’s difficult to know which layout is going to be the best setup possible for the work that your employees are completing. Again, this is going to bring up issues like collaboration, creativity, productivity, and what type of environment is necessary for your employees to thrive.

For some offices, setting up barriers is a great way to maintain the focus, while for other fields it can make the job much more distracting. More often than not, having desks that are close to the entry way or the front desk is a huge mistake that leaves your employees turning their heads every time that someone walks by. If you’re going to be incorporating certain rooms throughout a space, definitely take into consideration what types of distractions each of those layouts is going to come with.

It’s also good to realize that distractions will happen regardless, so don’t be too hard on yourself if every single layout that you create has some form of distraction surrounding it. When this does happen, you can simply write out the distractions and work to find solutions for them. When you think about most of them, you’re entirely able to find a solution that will not only decrease if not eliminate the distraction, but that will improve the layout as a whole.

Do you remember the days where colors were just colors? Little did we know that these things we were learning would have various effects on us. From the emotions that we experience to the levels of productivity that we might be going through, the colors that surround you are a huge contributor to various parts of your life.

In a workplace, there is no doubt that the colors that you incorporate throughout your space are going to make a difference. If you aren’t an expert in the psychology of colors, then it can be difficult to understand what types of colors will be the best for your office space. Afterall, there is no one color that works for all. You will have to take into consideration the tasks that you’re doing, the size of the group that will be working in a space, and the aesthetics and emotion that you’re hoping to have in a space.

We’re going to dive into some of the more basics with colors in our blog post today.

One of the most common choices in regards to colors that we see is white. This is a pretty easy color to incorporate into just about any space, and it’s extremely common. What is great about this is that there isn’t much to it, which leaves plenty of room for making the space into whatever it is that you need it to be.

The color itself is still very bright, which allows for people to remain alert throughout the day without feeling overly exposed to bright colors. It also gives off the feeling of a clean slate, which is fantastic for creative jobs or jobs that start off with a clean slate each day.

Another great feature of this color is that it’s easy to incorporate various colors, textures and designs with it because of how simplistic it is. For creative positions, a nice combination of black and white makes for a fantastic combination and is great for getting those creative ideas out.

When you’re looking to add a touch of color, but nothing that’s overpowering, a blue-gray is a great choice. Blue is a color known for it’s ability to cool and calm, so when you pair it with the gray shades, it can immediately become very laid back and relieve some high tensions.

When you’re looking for the right color to incorporate in an office that houses individuals working stressful positions, in a tough field, this is a color that you should be incorporating. Even if it isn’t the main color that you choose for the office, it’s one that’s pretty easy to add touches of throughout a space so that you can still benefit from those calming effects. Aside from that, blue is directly associated with productivity and connectivity of the mind. Which makes it an absolutely fantastic hue to have incorporated in the color that you choose, or as a focal color for your company.

Light Blue
Again, blue is a very calming color and it is one that should be incorporated into an office space somehow. A light blue color combines the lighter attributes of the white with the calming effects of blue. Together, you can have a light, airy and fresh feeling room, while still having that hint of blue that can reduce stress.

So, in this case, you should consider this color for creative positions that also incorporate deadlines or have a heavy workload. This can calm them enough when they’re faced with a blank slate. And, as with all of the colors we’ve mentioned so far, it’s extremely easy to pair with other colors.

Saturated Yellow
Now, before you immediately turn down the option of yellow, know that we are fully talking a saturated yellow. That means that it will be a lighter combination of white and yellow that you can use. Blue is a fantastic color for the mind, while yellow is a fantastic color for emotion.

In rooms where major clients or professionals will come in and sit down for presentations are immediately hit with a saturated yellow, they are more likely to be in tune with their emotions that are already heavier on the positive side. This is also a great color to incorporate if you are running a business that is heavily correlated with human interaction and connection; having positive emotions in check is a must.

Quite honestly, there are plenty of benefits to many of the colors that you’ll be exposed to in an office space, but there are also colors that will be more distracting than others. Millennials make up a majority of the workforce, and as a business owner you need to be aware of what types of setups and workstations these individuals work in. A majority of the changes that have happened in the workstation setup, such as the products and technologies that we incorporate, happened because of millennials and studies that have proven that change needed to happen in the workstation in order for productivity and healthy to hit a peak. Here are some of the changes that you should be considering with the office interior design and furniture that you choose.

Separation isn’t Bad
One of the things that people believe millennials want to see in an office space is a wide, open space. For a while, many companies were investing and building spaces that had large spaces with fewer walls. The reasoning behind this, at least the way that everyone justified it, was that millennials love being able to collaborate and having a space like this makes it easier for them to do so. But is that really the case?

While millennials definitely don’t mind being able to collaborate and get to know their fellow work mates, having some separation in your workspace is not a bad thing. Even small amounts of separation, like half walls between desks or separators between different departments or sections, can contribute to a higher level of productivity while still giving the space an overall open feeling.

If you don’t have the ability to have a medium between wide open and entirely separated, then the best thing that you can do is create spaces that are designed with collaboration in mind. This can take place in an open space with tables and drawing boards, but it can also take place in something a little more structured, like a conference room.

Open Door Feel
We just talked a little bit about collaboration, but one of the areas of collaboration that millennials love having accessible are their leaders. Back in the day, managers, supervisors and CEO’s would have an office space away from the rest of the employees. It would have thick doors, a standard desk and a couple of chairs for the instances where employees had to come in and talk to the higher positions in a company.

Now, the one thing that we do see often in businesses is an open door type of feel. This means that there are usually glass walls or doors separating the leaders from their team or an actual open accessibility with each other. This has proven to build stronger relationships between leaders and their team and has shifted the view of leaders being intimidating, to them being mentors. Breaks are not something that every office factors into their office design, and it makes sense that it hasn’t always been a priority when determining what types of things should be in an office space. While the concept of breaks haven’t changed too much, there certainly is a different feel with the way that people take them.

Sure some people still use their breaks to run out and have a smoke, but for millennials, most breaks are spent playing ping pong, pool or some other game. The thought process here is that these types of activities are great for clearing your mind and getting back to work with even more focus on the task that is about to get completed.

Big name brands like Google are known for these types of spaces and the activities that can be found scattered throughout the office.
